Louisa gulped. How come Gretl is talking like that, how can she know?
The thirteen year old girl had thought the same thing. She had even discussed that with Liesl, who had the same opinion: their Father didn't love Baroness Schraeder. He couldn't marry her. That moment, though, Louisa didn't know what to say.
"Hum, Gretl, why are you asking me that?" the girl inquired before making a sudden movement with the brush.
Gretl let out a shriek.
"Oh, sorry, Gretl. I won't hurt you anymore. It's just your hair is all messed up. When was the last time you brushed it?" Louisa asked playfully.
Louisa's position wasn't very comfortable, so she kneeled down behind Gretl to make her task easier.
"When, Gretl?" Louisa insisted seeing her sister hadn't answered.

Friedrich, Kurt, and Brigitta were already downstairs. Liesl heard something coming from the living room. She wondered why Father handn't whistled for them. The peeked in before entering. They were lined up, leaving the spaces for the others. Maria and Georg were sitting on the couch. "hmm" Liesl thought as she cautiously entered the room and stood by Friedrich. He nodded his head as if to say "good morning." none wanted to talk, they didnt know what was happening. "Frierick"she whispered."hm?" "whats going on?" Friedrich shrugged. Father hadn't said anything to them. Liesl looked at Frauline Maria, she looked a bit different, wiser, maybe. "Wheres the baroness" Liesl wanted to ask, but that was a silly adolescent question. She decided it was best just to stand there and wait..for what ever it was.

Gretl shrugged. "Liesl was supposed to yesterday but she was all dreamy." Louisa finished up her hair and Gretl shook Marta awake and ran downstairs and into the dining room. She joined her siblings.

Louisa was the last to join in the line. She looked surprised at Maria and her Father. She didn't believe what her eyes told her. They seemed different, and Louisa could tell something good was up. Besides, the Baroness wasn't there. It was a good signal! Despite her happiness, she did her best to keep her face still. As her siblings, she just waited for her Father to speak. Apparently he had been waiting for everyone to be in line. Now they were all there it was the right moment to speak.

"Good Morning, children." He said, smiling at them. "Good Morning Father, Fraulein Maria" they said as they had been taught. "Children, Fraulein Maria and I have come to an agreement. She will stay her for a good long time, even after you're all grown up and gone." "But, why? Do you need a governess, Father?" Gretl asked. He chuckled. "No, Gretl. But I do need a wife and you a loving mother. Do you think Fraulein Maria is a good candiate?" Gretl was the first to get over the shock and run to Fraulein Maria and throw her arms round her.

Liesl had been thinking about things. Rolf and Her would always talk if her father was going to get married again and if Liesl could handle it. When little Gretl hugged Maria Liesl came back to the real world. Her eyes widened and in seconds everyone else was on her and Georg shouting with excitement. "Oh! Thats wonderful!" Liesl threw in, wondering if anyone heard it.
Pushing a very excited Kurt off his lap, Georg somehow managed to stand up. "Shouldn't I at least tell you all first?" he said with a laugh. They laughed with him. Liesl noticed her father's changes, he was smiling again, and so was she.

Georg cleared his throat. Squeezing Maria’s hand, he started: “well, children, Maria and I have talked last night and made an important decision. All the children were looking at the couple with attention, expecting the best. Some of them already knew, or could imagine, what their Father would say.
Liesl and Louisa shared a smile, and the oldest girl blinked at her sister.
“So what, Father?” Kurt asked, not being able to supress his curiosity.
“Fräulein Maria will be our new Mother!” Brigitta exclaimed wisely.
Georg looked at her bemused. “How can she be so smart?” he thought.
“Well, Brigitta, seen you have spoiled my surprise-“ he began.
The girl looked at him, confused, regreting not having pondered her previous words.
Georg noticed Brigitta’s scared face. “That’s alright, darling, I was joking,” he assured.
Brigitta smiled in relief.
“She takes everything so seriously,” Maria told herself, looking at the 10 year-old girl.
As I was saying, we’ll marry,” Georg spoke, not knowing a better way to do so.
“Oh, that will be so nice to call her Mother,” Louisa thought. She would finally have the Mother she wanted so much.
The little girls ran for their parents. It hadn’t dawned on them what thier Father meant when he asked if Maria was a ‘good candidate.’
