“Dom, do you know what happened with Dani, why she went missing?” Louisa asked. “I know she’s been crying. Did she tell you something?”

Dom leaned into his aunt, so he could whisper.
"Well it's like this, she was made fun of because she can't read too well by some girl named Mary or Marie or something like that. Oh by the way, you gotta talk to that Sr. Anne, about you know, Dani's problem." Dom Continued
"So anyways, this girl makes fun of her, and I guess they get into some sort of fight and Dani punches her in the nose and made it bleed! Boy, if only we had her on our Boxing team at school-" He received yet another stern look from his aunt.
"So, she got all upset and I found her under the steps at her school. Poor Dani was sitting there sobbing away." His face was filled with sorrow. "Sometimes I feel really bad, and I just wanna erase their past so they can start off new here and you know, be somewhat normal. I really do feel bad. "

“Why hadn’t they told us Dani can’t read well?” Louisa wondered. But she should’ve known. Of course, she hadn’t been at school for three years, according to that document the police officer had brought them as soon as Dani arrived. Louisa hadn’t seen it, but her parents had told her.
“I’ll call up Sister Anne later this afternoon,” she told Dom. “I’m sure she will want to talk to me anyway,” she said that aloud, but more to herself. "Thank you, darling."
The boy nodded.
“Now, Dom,” Louisa looked at her nephew. “Could you please help me prepare things for lunch? Grandma and Grandpa should be arriving soon with your Mother. After you wash yourself, come to the kitchen, I’ll be there."

"Yes Ma'am" Dom said and he clicked his heels and saluted the army way. He then stomped off and ran upstairs to wash.
After a little while he returned back all clean, ready to help with lunch. He found his aunt Louisa in the kitchen.
"So what's for lunch?"

The Lodge wasn’t full. It usually wasn’t during week days, and when it weren't holidays or something. Because of that, the cooks could have their day off. So Louisa and the others in the Logde had to cook, and she didn’t mind, for she liked to cook. She remembered she had told Dani one day she would cook something to her, and the girl would be able to say what he thought about her cooking stills. Louisa grinned at the thought, but at the same time she felt sorry for Dani.
“What will we have for lunch, Dom? You know what, I haven’t really decided. Do you have any suggestion?” Louisa asked, moving from cabinet to cabinet to retrieve the supplies she would need.

"Do you want to try to make spaghetti?" He put an emphisis on try. Strike three with the stern looks from his aunt.
"I mean it, I'm sort of in the mood for spaghetti. We haven't had it in well over four or five days. Whatdya' say Auntie?"
He started taking out the tomatoes from the basket on the counter, so he could start the sauce.

Louisa agreed and grinned when the boy turned to his tomatoes. She thought how he had grown in the past few years, even months. Despite the stern looks she had given him, she liked they way he acted, so livingly. It was comforting, even in situations like theirs right then. And it reminded Louisa of hers fourteen-year old self.
“So you are TRYING to make the sauce, Dom?” It was Louisa’s time to mock him.
He looked at with an intrigued look, but soon after the two bursted out in laughter.
“I’m doing the spaghetti, alright. Let me know if you need any help,” she said meaningful. She wasn’t very sure if the boy knew how to do it, but if she knew Liesl well, and she did, she had already taught him how to make different sauces and some dishes.
The two started to work and were finished just in time, for when they herad the sound of a car arriving all they had to do was prepare the table.
“Is it your Mother?” Louisa asked as she transferred the pasta from the pan to the bowl.

Dom ran to the window. "Yessum' its them." "Oh boy, looks like they did shopping." Dom knew Liesl probably bought him clothes or something like new shoes. "I wonder what they got."
He ran back to the dinning room and helped Louisa get everything perfect. When the duo was done they smiled an accomplished smile at eachother.
"Doesn't look too bad does it?" Dani had come down and was watching TV in the other room, Dom told her it was alright to do so.

On the way home, Dom had done his best to make her laugh and had done very well. He was very silly sometimes. She forced back giggles. They reached the lodge and was nearly throttled by Aunt Louisa and was told to go upstairs to wash. She did so, the dog following her and she washed up, trying to scrub her face clean of tears, but her eyes were still red. Oh, well. Nothing could be done about that. She patted her face dry and went downstairs and sat down on the couch and watched TV. She looked up as her grandparents and Aunt Liesl came inside and she helped them with their packages and a few minutes later, they were sitting down for lunch. Dani announced "I'm not going back to school, ever again."

Dom looked up from his bowl of spaghetti. He looked to his mother.
"Dani you have to go back to school. Just because you had some trouble, you musn't give up school. I know you're strong enough to go back." Many a time while Liesl was growing up she was told to always face her fears, so she knew what she was talking about. She took a sip of her drink.
Louisa said practically the samething as did Maria and Georg, they all encouraged the girl, somewhat making her feel better.
"And if she bothers you again, just take it. Then we'll get her later-" He joked "Seriously, people like that cant see that you are affected by their joking, otherwise they'll keep doin' it." Dom said

As Louisa had told Dom earlier, later that afternoon she called Sister Anne up, and heard from her what had happened at school. Nothing very different from what Dom had told her. But the real reason for her calling was to try and solve Dani’s problem, as it was clear she wasn’t prepared to attend classes with people of her age. She needed special teaching. Sister Anne asked Louisa to go to the school and bring with her Dani’s school records, so they’d be able to discuss what to do.
They decided that the girl would be placed in a class with children one year younger than her. They knew she would manage to keep up with the class, judging for her records, that showed that, while she was at school, she had been a good student, so she shouldn’t have problems. Louisa assured Sister Anner that the girl would be given special lessons at home too, and she was sure Maria would help her in that manner.
When Louisa returned to the Lodge she was happy to see that Danielle was playing with Ellie, Nina and Jan. Liesl had returned to her house with Dom, and Anton would be back from work any time. She needed to rush to have dinner ready when he did.

Dani had been told that she couldnt just not go. But she'd show them. She'd go, and they'd see how big a mistake school was.
The next morning, Dani was refusing to get out of bed.

As Liesl stepped out of Dani's room, Dom walked up the steps and met with his mom "Go ahead, you try." Liesl said as she patted her son's head.
"Sure thing" Dom strutted inside Dani's room once he knocked.
"Hey you! C'mon get up" Dom went over to her bed, making sure it was alright, he sat down.

Dani scowled at her cousin as he tried to get her up. "I ain't getting up!" she declared. She couldn't-and wouldn't go to school.
