Has anyone watched the German-made movie based on the Trapp family story, which was made before The Sound of Music? An English-dubbed version is available on video, and I ordered it last week and just got around to watching it tonight. This movie, as far as accuracy goes, is somewhere in between the real story and The Sound of Music.
A few real-life details that appear in the German movie:
-Most of the kids' names match up to those in the real family.
-Father Wasner is in this movie.
-The bank the von Trapps' money was in failed before they left Austria, and they were forced to earn a living as a singing group.
-When they left Austria, they made it look like they were going hiking in the mountains.
-This movie showed the family doing their own construction on the house they bought in Vermont.
-Maria spent Christmas with the family.
-It was a Princess Yvonne that Georg was thinking of marrying, not a Baroness Schrader.
A few incorrect details:
-Though the kids' names were mostly correct, the one who was Marta in The Sound of Music and Johanna in real life was Rosmarie in the German movie. Rosmarie is actually the first child Maria gave birth to.
-A few of the kids were out of order in age.
-Maria and Georg had one child, a boy (name was never mentioned), before the family left Austria. In real life, they had two girls, Rosmarie and Lorli, and Maria was pregnant with son Johannes when they came to America.
-The kids were shown as still being young all through the movie. By the time the family came to America, most of the "original seven" were actually grown.
I could probably add a lot more to both of the above categories, but it's after 1:30 a.m. and I'm not thinking straight! LOL!
Now, as for the movie itself:
-Acting was NOWHERE NEAR as good as that in The Sound of Music! Have Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer spoiled us or what??? LOL!
-There is of course a lot of singing but no real productions made out of any of the songs the way they are in The Sound of Music. This movie isn't really a musical.
-I am completely convinced that there will NEVER be a Captain von Trapp as gorgeous as Christopher Plummer!!!! I saw the play on Broadway in 1998 and saw the local theater production of it here in Nashville in 1996, and now I've seen the German movie, and NONE of those "captains" come anywhere close to measuring up, either in looks or in acting ability!
-Ditto for Julie Andrews as Maria! The German actress played her well and was true to the character, I think, but who can top Julie Andrews!
-I'm almost 100% certain I saw some shots (buildings, scenery, etc.) that are also in The Sound of Music.
This movie is entertaining and has its amusing spots, but I think overall it's rather bland compared both to the real story and to The Sound of Music. All that said, I think this movie is a must-see for any Trapp family fan and/or Sound of Music fan!
Here's a link to a site where you can order this movie if you want. It's surprisingly reasonably priced!

Sorry if this sounds like I'm rambling; it's late!
