Marta went up to the nursery and flopped on her bed. Fraulein Josephine had told Papa what the children had done to her toothbrush and blamed it all on her. She was banned to her room until she apologized.

"Marta, are you in there?" Liesl asked knocking on the door.
Getting no answer, she decided to step in. Her heart ached when she saw her little sister face buried in her pillow, certaily sobbing. Liesl knew it hadn't been her fault. Well, not only hers. Louisa had had the idea and everyone agreed to join in. It wasn't fair what Fräulein Josephine had done to Marta. Liesl wasn't certain about what she should do, if she should ask Louisa to take the blame or if everyone should take it together. It would be sorted out later, for now she was there to comfort the poor girl.
"Marta, talk to me. I know it wasn't your fault," Liesl said, sitting on Marta's bed. "We'll tell Father, ok?

Marta hugged her big sister. "He'll be furious." she suddenly giggled "It was funny."

Liesl returned the embrace and laughed at the memory, a bit relieved to see that Marta wasn't sobbing.
"Yes, it was funny. And we will tell Father it wasn't your idea, right? But why did Fräulein Josephine say it was your fault?" Liesl asked curious. After all, it wasn't even Marta the one to put the glue on their governess' toothbrush. It was Friedrich. And, like all the others, she had only been watching while the woman gasped at the terrible taste. "Well," Liesl remembered. "Maybe she was the one who laughed most."

"She thought it was me cause I left my hair ribbon in her room when I was doing the frogs." Marta informed her big sister. She climbed into her big sisters lap. "If Mama was still alive, this wouldn't of happened."

Liesl swallowed hard. Marta was true. If their Mother was still alive, their Father wouldn't have become a distant and cold person. So they wouldn't have to play tricks on the governesses to try and get his atenttion. Anyway, there had to be another way to make him aware of their presence. So far, the little (and the not so little) tricks they had played on the women had been in vain. After he had scolded his children, he would again be apart from them, and their situation woudn't improve at all. Actually, Liesl thought, it would become even worse, for their Father seemed to be more and more distant from them as the days passed by.
"But what are we supposed to do?" Liesl wonderd. It was hard to accept being treated like that by their own Father. The children didn't know, but they would soon find out, from someone they would've never expected to.
That moment wasn't the best one to get into all these thoughts. Liesl had in her arms a very scared Marta, and she had to make her feel better, to make her see that it hadn't been her fault.
"Let's go tell Louisa to help us in our hard task," Liesl said, letting Marta go and standing up from the bed. The older girl noticed Marta's intrigued expression. "She has to tell Father it wasn't your fault," she explained.
Marta's expression didn't change. "I know, I know, she won't want, but we'll find a way to make her do," Liesl assured, but didn't know herself how she would convince Louisa to do this. "Come on," she called, taking Marta's hands and leading her to Louisa's room.

The other children were there, Gretl was fast asleep as she was only four. "Hey Marta." Friedrich said. "Louisa, you tell Papa it was your idea." Marta said. "Yeah, it's not fair Marta takes all the blame when she had nothing to do with it." Kurt said.

Louisa seemed annoyed by that request. But when she looked at Marta and saw her gloomy expression her heart softened. Even so, she wasn't willingly to take all the blame alone. After all, it's true that she was the one who had had the idea, but not the one to do it all alone.
"Well," Louisa started. "I won't tell Father it was my idea unless we take the blame together," she said defiantly.
"Louisa!" Liesl reprimanded as she felt Marta embrace her arm.
"I know the idea was mine, but you all helped me!" Louisa retorted.
"It's fair," Brigitta said. "We did it because we wanted to. We can't let Father think it was all Louisa's fault. She looked at her blond sister and received an unexpected smile from her.
Louisa was about to thank Brigitta when something ocurred to her. "Anyway, why should we apologize if we do know we'll do something again soon?" she asked.
"Because Father wants to!" Liesl replied impatient.
It was hard to convince Louisa if she didn't want to be convinced. But that time she gave in. "All right, all right, I'll tell him. Well, we will tell him," she emphasized.
"I'll never manage to make Louisa do something the way I want," Liesl thought annoyed.

Just then, Fraulien Josephine came in. "Marta, what are you doing here?" She demanded. Marta didnt answer her and clung to Lisel, scowling at her. "Marta, go to your room!" She siezed Marta's arm and led her back to the nursery.

Liesl followed the woman. "Wait!" Then, before leaving the room, she shot an angry look towards Louisa. "See what you've done?"
"Wait, Fräulein Josephine! You won't take Marta. She did nothing, it wasn't her fault," Liesl stated, trying to cacth her breath after having run all the way along the corridor.
Fräulein Josephine didn't even looked at Liesl. Nor did she let Marta go.
"Besides, we were just about to tell Father what really happened," Liesl added and, all of sudden, intending to catch her governess off guard, she pulled her sister out of the woman's hand.
Marta stumbled but didn't complain.
"Sorry, Marta, I had to do that. I couldn' t let her take you to your room again. Did I hurt you?" Liesl asked, taking Marta's hand and massaging the wrist by which she had managed to free her from Fräulein Josephine's grasp. "Let's go make Louisa tell Father what happened. Come on," Liesl called, and the two went back to Louisa's bedroom.

Marta went back into the room. "Louisa, you're gonna tell Daddy, or else I'll tell about you-know-what. Concerning a certain series of missing tests." Louisas eyes widened.

"Don't dare you tell Father!" Louisa warned.
Then she noticed Marta's defiantly expression. "I told you I would tell him, didn't I?" she asked.
It was Liesl who answered. "You did, even so you did nothing to prevent Fräulein Josephine from taking Marta to her room again."
"I didn't have time!" Louisa said in her own behalf.
"Alright, alright," Liesl spoke impatient. "We'd better get going then. Who will follow us?" she asked, taking Marta's hands again.
Everyone followed her to their Father's study, including a reluctant Louisa.

Marta felt intimidated. She always did when she was around her father. More so when he was cross. Mother had been dead four years, but she could remember bits and pieces. Not much. These memories were helped along by stories her siblings told about Mother. "You knock." "I'm not knocking" "We'll I'm not." This could've gone on for hours but Friedrich knocked. "Yes?" "Father, may we came in?" "Yes." They filed in and stood in a straight line. "What is it?" "Louisa has something to tell you." Lisel said and pushed Louisa forward.
