Gretl von Trapp walked into the big room and saw her whole family there. Except Father. She ran to Mother and hugged her, crying. "I'm sorry I told! I didn't mean to!"

"Shh, darling, come here," Maria said, taking the scared girl in her arms. "What did you tell?" she asked, trying to calm down herself more than Gretl.

Maria noticed the bruises on Gretl's face. She would ask what they had done to her, but thought she'd better do it later. Now she needed to comfort the poor girl, not bring back what must have been terrible moments. She hugged Gretl hard. "It was not your fault, darling. Don't think about that," Maria demanded, letting the girl bury her head against her chest.
Maria looked at the other chidren seeking for support.
"Where is Father?" Louisa got the courage to ask after some minutes of mortifying silence.

Maria gasped. She was wordless. Looking around, she saw the other children's scared faces. They were all frightened and she was helpless; there was nothing she could do except for praying and trying to keep them calm. The moment she opened her mouth to say something they all heard the crescent sound of footsteps.
"Who is-" Brigitta started, but Liesl stepped closer and coverd her mouth.
"Shh, keep quiet," she demanded.
Maria felt relieved upon seeing Liesl's strength, but only until they saw the doorknob moving. Everyone swallowed hard and waited.

Gretl clung to her mother as the door opened and saw the man who had hurt her. "Come along." when they didnt move, he grabbed Gretl off her mother's lap and give her push and Gretl started. Friedrich picked her up as they walked through the main hall. The Nazi leading them stopped outside a door and led them down to a cell.
A few days later, Gretl was sitting on a bench playing with her shoe that was getting too big for her. A tall man with a funny mustache was walking in the garden when he saw her. "Hello there." "Hello." "What's your name?" "Gretl. What's yours?" "Adolph. What are you doing here?" "Waiting for one of the Nazis to come to take me to my family." "Come with me." Gretl soon became with the man known as Adolph Hitler.

Meanwhile Maria and the other children were at the lunch table that had been improvised for them to have teir meals. Gretl had been taken to take a sun bath a few hours ago and still hadn't returned. The Nazis used to take the children in turn and let them stay outside for a while, always been watched by one of the Nazis. But they were always brought back in time to lunch or dinner. Today, however, the fact that Gretl hadn't returned yet made Maria extremely worried. She was caught in her thoughts when Liesl leaned down and whispered in her ears.
"Where do you think Gretl is, Mother? She should be here by now, shouldn't she?" Liesl asked not wanting her siblings to hear her.
But it didn't matter, for all of them were already aware of their little sister's unexpected abscene. Maria noticed that when she looked at them and saw their terrified expressions. Then she turned to Liesl and looked directly into her eyes.
"Yes, Liesl. I don't know why she isn't here yet," Maria replied in a low voice.
"Do you think they might have forgotten her?" Liesl asked hopeful. Any other opition could be much worse. She didn't even want to think about the other alternatives.
Maria wanted to say 'yes', but something told her that Gretl hadn't been forgotten and she shouldn't give Liesl false hopes. "I'm not sure. But anyway I think we'll soon know where she is," she answered trying not to seem much worried.
"Yes," was all Liesl could say before Louisa spoke.
"Where is Gretl after all?"
Liesl looked at her with a sharp look, but the girl didn't mind.
"Well, I'm sure we'll find out soon, Louisa," Maria affirmed. "But for know I think the best we can do is eat our meals before they get cold," she said trying to change a bit the children's mood. It seemed to work, for all of them diverted their gazes from her and started to eat. All in silence.

The von Trapps had no need to worry. All the Nazi's knew that Gretl was Hitler's little pet and if they harmed her in any way, they would be harmed as well. The little girl was eating with her adopted father and his guests. Afterwards, she entertained them with a german nazi song. Hitler dismissed her to her gorgesous room and she had bribed the Nazi to take her to her family (with the threat of a temper tantrum). She went down the hill to them, and saw Marta staring t her outfit She was dressed in a dress fancier than she had ever had, with the swatiska embroidered on her dress. "Hello." Friedrich asked "What are you wearing?" "This? Oh, Papa Adolph gave it to me. Isn't it pretty?" "But that-" Kurt poked the swatsika. "That's nothing. Judt a design." Marta opened her mouth and Gretl turned on her heel, speaking to the Nazis "Leave us." A bold one said "No, miss." She glared at him, hands on her hips and said "If you don't, I'll tell Papa Adolph that you hurt me!" He looked alarmed and he and the others left. She turned back to her family "Are they feeding you enough? You're much too thin." She pulled plenty of food out of her pockets and piled it in Maria's hands.

Maria almost dropped the food Gretl gave her. She was shocked to see how she was getting along well with the Nazis. She had already told the little girl that those people weren't the ones you should be close to. But at the same time Maria knew that their safety depended somehow on Gretl's status there. So she'd better don't interfere. The older children had a knot in their throats as well, but, following Maria's instructions, didn't say anything.
"Let's go inside, children," Maria called. "It's getting dark," she added, taking Gretl's and Marta's hands.
"Why do I think it's not normal the affection that Nazi shows towards Gretl?" Maria thought in their way back to their room. She feared the worst.
"Why does Gretl have a room to her own?" Louisa whispered in Liesl's ears. "Isn't it a bit strange?"
Liesl Looked at her sister. She had been wondering the same, and had told Maria about her worry the night before. Maria had assured the girl it wouldnt be nothing serious, though she herself wasn't much sure about that.
"Why, Louisa?" Liesl asked.
"Why what?"
"Why do you think it's strange?" Liesl wanted to know what was going on in Louisa's mind.
"Well, I don't understand why we all have to sleep together while she has that big room only to herself."
So it was a kind of jealousy, not worry, what Louisa felt towards Gretl. It wasn't a kind thought, but, considering the current situation, it was better that having something serious to worry about, something that Louisa didn't need. And something that was already stealing nights of sleep from Maria and Liesl.
"Don't complain, Louisa. It could be worse," Liesl said, studying her sister's reaction.
Louisa made a face but didn't say anything more until they reached their room and Gretl was separated from them once more.

Gretl turned back and waved to her family and skipped upstairs, singing the Nazi song. She climbed into bed and went to sleep, after studying the Nazi flag positioned so she saw it when she woke up and went to sleep.
Marta frowned. She knew that song. The nazis sang it. And the symbol on Gretl's clothing was the same as the flag that made Father so mad. "Mother, why is Gretl becoming one of them?" she asked looking up at her.
Hitler smiled as he placed a doll Gretl had admired in a store. He wrapped her arms around the doll and kissed the almost six year old on her forehead.

Maria had been trying to sleep for hours, but her worrysome thoughts kept her away from rest. The fact the some of the children were also awaken, which she knew due to the sounds of inquiet movements in their beds (if you could call them beds), didn't help at all.
"Don't take her!" someone shouted.
"What's it?" another startled voice asked.
Maria diverted from her disturbing thoughts to answer. "It's nothing, Liesl. Louisa is talking in her sleep again. Do nothing and she will stop."
It was true, Louisa had been talking while asleep for a couple of nights. That was the way through which she showed her ansiety, because she wouldn't show willingly how that situation was making her suffer. No matter how hard she avoided to show her weakiness, her subcouncious always betrayed her. Maria was worried about Louisa, but she knew there was nothing she could do, except for doing her best to make the children comfortable. Untill that night, though, Louisa's words hadn't startled anyone. But this time it had been louder. And Liesl had heard it.
"Why is she doing that? I didn't know she talked in her sleep. I thought it was real," Liesl told. "I wonder if she is dreaming."
"Dreaming?" Maria whispered.
"Yes. Because I've been having terrible dreams."
Indeed Louisa wasn't the only one to be affected by those terrible happenings. One of the children kept shifting in the bed, but din't say anything. "Friedrich," Maria thought. But the one who worried her most was Gretl. She still was acting stragely, as if she was fond of the Nazis. And the little girl seemed to be the only one that didn't notice how serious things were.
That moment Maria and Liesl heard sounds of rushing footsteps. Soon after the door opened and the little girl about whom Maria had just been thinking of entered the room. She was sobbing.

"Mother, Mother!" Gretl cried. She saw her mother sit up. "Gretl, what is it?" "They're seperating you and sending you to death camps. I heard them." "Dear God." "I won't let them kill you. I won't!" The other children had woken up and Friedrich said "What are we going to do?" The youngest said "I have an idea. I'll distract them long enough for you to get out." She pulled a ring of keys from her dress pocket and found the one to their cell door. She freed her family. "Where will we meet?" She asked in a whisper. "How about the Abbey?" Kurt suggested. They all agreed to go there.
Gretl went to the main room and started kicking and screaming. Her family snuck out and she continued to kick and scream. Hitler, annoyed that he had been interupted, excused himself and went to the room. "What's this?" "I don't know Sir." the head guard said. Hitler bent down over the girl and picked her up. "What is it Gretl?" "I want a cookie, but he said no." she lied, pointing a chubby finger at the head guard. "You may have your cookie." To the head guard, he said "Do you think you can keep a little girl calm for fifteen minutes?" He turned on his heel and went back into his meeting.
LAter that night, the Von Trapps reached the Abbey and they were ushered into a room. A man was standing there, looking out the window. He turned and they saw it was Captain Von Trapp. "Daddy!" Marta cried and ran to him. He picked her up, hugging her tightly.
