Gretl stared out the window as it was her turn to be on watch. All the children were taking turns watching for Father. She spied his car pulling in and she ran down the hall, yelling "He's back! Father's back!" She got in just as Father opened the door.
Capt Von Trapp entered the villa and gave a short blast on his whistle. His children came out from the schoolroom. Their faces were red from the sun. They had not been following his orders. Once they were in the mainroom, he strode in front of them, lecturing. "Glue on her toothbrush. Paint in her hair. Shoes nailed down. Who did this?" When he reacieved no answer, he said. "Fine. Since you all act Gretl's age, you will be treated as you are five. Straight to school, straight back. No friends over. An hour after dinner, bedtime. No pocket money. Are we understood?"

As fun as it was to do things to the governess, Liesl felt bad and somewhat immature. She nodded her head. The rest of her siblings did as she did and nodded back. Georg Shot a dissapointed look at the three eldest children and walked into another room, Leaving them there to gather their thoughts.

Louisa felt utterly sorry. Each and every thing her Father had mentioned had been result of her ideas. It was true that some of her siblings, specially Friedrich and Kurt, had helped, but it was mostly her fault.
After Georg left the room the girl hadn't even had the courage to face her brothers and sisters. They had been punished for something she had planned. But what was she supposed to do, take the blame all alone? She didn't want it either.
For the moment, she just raised her head when Gretl spoke. Looking at that innocent face made her even more regretful.
"I'm sorry," was all she managed to say, this time facing the others.

Gretl shrugged. She didn't care about the punishment. She only lost her pocket money. Friedrich moved out of the line and sat on a chair and Marta followed him. Gretl sat on a chair next to Liesl.

Louisa observed as, one by one, her siblings stepped out of line and sat on chairs or simply stood up close to each other. She felt they were resenftul against her. She didn't know what to do, and feared what they would say when she talked to them. Even so, she summoned up all the braveness she found inside her and walked towards the group.
"I know it was my fault," said said, looking at her own feet.

Gretl went over to her and hugged her "It's not your fault," she told her "We all helped. And it's more Father's fault for hiring her." Just then, Brigitta called out the signal. "He's coming!" they quickkly got back in line and started to march upstairs. They reached the schoolroom and Friedrich said "What should we do with the next one?" Gretl's gaze drifted to the lake. The boat was there. Suddenly she had an idea. "How about if we take the next one out to the lake and dump her?" she said.
Meanwhile, Georg had been on the phone, trying to locate a governess. He had found a nurse for Gretl a few days ago and she would be arriving today. After making a few calls, he located someone, and left for a moment to get the bus schedule. He heard the children talking softly and then Brigitta saying something, then it was dead silent-except for the sound of the children rushing back into line. He saw them marching away and saw something squirm in Friedrich's pocket. Dear lord. He would have to have the children remove the animals. He returned to the phone with the bus schedule. This new one-Fraulein Helga would arrive in a few days. He found a large crate and placed it in the hallway. Then he blew his whistle. All the children came running. "Children, you will go into the schoolroom and your bedrooms and find whatever things you have in store for Gretl's nurse and your governess. Animals," he glanced at Louisa, "Nails and anything of the like," the boys, "and pinecones." he glanced at the youngest ones. "Am I understood?" They all nodded silently. "Go!"

Liesl hadn't said anything since the time Georg told them to march till she went to her room. She knew she had nothing in there in store for the governess, it was mostly Louisa or the boys that held their "equiptment."
She sat down on her bed, waiting till she heard everyone head back downstairs. Wondering if they would actually give up anything they planned made Liesl think about how she really didn't like playing tricks on the Governess. If it wasn't for the lack of her father's attention she wouldn't even be involved. Yes, it was funny at times to her, but trying to watch after her siblings was a tough job, she'd be happy with a governess to care for them. "I don't need one of corse" she said. "I'm far too grown-up and experienced" Another thought dawned on her..."I can take care of my brothers and sisters myself, yes, thats right I CAN take care of them myself, I don't need another woman taking my job."
"yes," she stroked her chin "getting rid of a governess would be a lovely idea."
Footsteps could be heard traveling downstairs. Liesl stood up. Things would go as planned, they would chase away the new governess. Maybe, just maybe their father would realize they really don't need one.

A few hours later, the children had just "decorated" the nurse's room when the doorbell rang. She had arrived! They all took off to the nursery and just made it as Father came into the hallway. He glanced up and shook his head. They had given out several things and he had had Franz release the animals back into the wild and throw the other things out. He blew the whistle for his children.
Gretl had heard the whistle as she climbed into Friedrichs lap. Friedrich had took off with her in his arms and put her down at the door. She ran after him and got in her place.
