"I dont know what's gotten into Gretl, she was always somewhat unmanagable at times, but now..." Liesl didnt really want to talk about her sister like that. She heard the whistle "Oh Louisa we must go!"

"But Liesl, if we go, he'll never stop calling us by using that horrible whistle. And I don't like at all to be treated like that. Do you?" Louisa asked in a defiantly way.

"I do not- But if we do not go, he will just keep signaling us. I can hear my signal in my sleep sometimes. I wish that mo-" Liesl put her hand to her mouth. She always said more than she was supposed to when it came to her feelings about when Georg still had their mother."Oh nevermind" Liesl got up "Come on.." She grabbed Louisa's hand

Louisa realized abouth whom Liesl would talk. Even though she missed her Mother very much as well, she let it pass.
"You see, Liesl?' Louisa said resisting Liesl's effort to make her move. "You even hear your signal in your sleep. I don't see how it can be a good thing. Why don't we just wait and see what will happen if we don't answer?"
Liesl had stopped to pull her. "You must not be afraid of him, Liesl," Louisa said satisfied that her sister was listening to her. But for some reason her last line didn't make Liesl happy. She grabbed Louisa's hand again.
"Hey, stop that!" the blond girl demanded.

"Please what, Liesl?"
Liesl was still staring at her.
"If I stay here I will be the one to get in trouble, not you. Don't try to be my Mother, Liesl," Louisa spated.

Liesl was shocked. She didnt know what to say. It was true, Liesl was being her mother. She had always been everyone's mother affter, well their mother. She had always looked after them and showed them affection. Now, she wasnt receiving any thanks but getting repremanded instead. Liesl almost had tears in her eyes "Fine Louisa- if thats how you really feel" she spoke, then left, closing the door gently behind her.

Louisa realized how she had made Liesl feel. Regret came over her, and she cursed herself for having acted that way. After all, she knew Liesl just wanted to support them, to try to replace some of the affection they had lost and missed so much.
First she didn't know what to do, then she decided to go after Liesl and apologize. Her sister didn't deserve to be treated like that. Not at all.
"Liesl, wait!" Louisa shouted trying to catch up with Liesl before she reached their Father.

It was too late. By the time Louisa had come out of her room Liesl had got in line just in time to be dismissed. Liesl went in her room and locked the door. she fell onto her bed and gazed at the ceiling. Thoughts rushed through her head all at once. Images of the telegram boy, when her father was happy, then an image of their mother came to mind. "How-how could I think to take your place" now Liesl felt guilty for trying to make up for something, to fill the gap that only their mother could seal.

When Louisa noticed that Liesl had returned to the line she stopped in her track. If she went further her Father would keep her there. She just waited to see what would happen. Nobody could see her. When everyone was dismissed and Louisa saw her Father head downstairs, she observed where Liesl would go. She saw her sister enter her room and heard a click when she closed the door.
"Locked," Louisa told herself.
At first Louisa thought of letting Liesl alone and just return to her own room. But the grief she felt didn't let her do so. She had to talk to Liesl, to apologize. With that in mind, she approached her sister's door.
"Liesl?" she called knocking gently.
No answer.
"Oh, God!" "Liesl, please!" she called again. And waited.

Louisa realized that Liesl had unlocked the door. But hadn't opened it. Carefully she did it herself. Liesl was sat on her bad, her back turned to Louisa.
The blonde girl didn't know where to start. Her will was to run to her sister and apologize with a big hug, but she didn't do that.
"Liesl, please, look at me," she asked instead.
The oldest didn't reply, nor turned.
Louisa approacheg the bed and sat down. She put a hand on Liesl's shoulders. "I'm so sorry, Liesl."

Liesl turned around. She suprised Louisa for, she was crying something fierce. "I'm the one who's sorry, I dont know what I was thinking. I could never be mother, I didnt mean to take her-" Liesl didnt finish, she let out a cry and grabbed Louisa and cried to her, apologizing. "It's just so hard...It's hard.." Liesl couldnt speak much further. The eldest daughter sat there, sobbing in the arms of her younger sibling.

"Oh," Louisa gasped. She felt even worse when she saw her sister's state, crying her eyes out. All of sudden Liesl had thrown herself on her shoulders. Louisa felt a little embarrassed but took her sister in her arms. She felt like crying too, but didn't.
"I know it's hard, Liesl," Louisa tried to offer some comfort.
"And you don't need to apologize. I'm the one who needs to. I acted wrongly, Liesl. It's just that I feel so bad for the way Father acts towards us."
Louisa's words made Liesl cry even harder. The blond girl didn't know what to do. She just held her sister and, not being able to hold her tears anymore, started to sob too.

The sight was odd, rare, but special. Liesl was bigger than Louisa, yet she was the one being held. Liesl realized Louisa was the one helping her now. "Oh now look what I've done" she said to herself when she saw her cry too. Liesl picked her head up and looked at Louisa's dress, it was wet from her tears. "Oh- Louisa, your dress." Liesl, still with tears, pushed Louisa's blonde hair from her face. "Look at us.." Liesl snapped back into mature mode. "Fix yourself Louisa," She looked at her messed up dress and hair " you look awful" Liesl smiled.
